Summary

JOB SUMMARY:

The Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs (APAP) serves as the principal advisor to the NDU Provost on Academic Planning and Outcome-Based Military Education (OBME), curriculum content and implementation, academic governance and faculty affairs, outreach and stakeholder engagement. The APAP is responsible for formulating strategies for curriculum development and implementation as well as faculty recruitment, renewal, retention, and development. Consults with senior officials throughout the Department of Defense (DOD) and other government departments and leaders in the civilian academic community. Acts as liaison to private and public sector organizations and academic institutions both nationally and internationally. Interacts with Commandants, Chancellors, Senior Directors, Deans of Faculty, faculty members, staff, and researchers throughout the University. Develops policy and operational guidance affecting educational philosophy, methodology, faculty qualifications, performance, and development. Performs other duties as assigned by the Provost.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Academic and Educational Leadership

  • Leads the development, implementation, execution, and evaluation of academic programs, courses, and curriculum. Ensures the full coverage of mandated US Code Title 10 Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) topics in university curriculum.
  • Provides oversight to colleges to ensure the currency and relevance of curriculum.
  • Responsible for development and revision of NDU Academic Policy, Instructions, and Directives concerning academic programs and faculty matters.
  • Represents NDU at the Military Education Coordination Council Working Group (MECCWG) and Joint Faculty Education Conference (JFEC).
  • Oversees the NDU Ethics Committee and coverage of ethics in university curriculum.
  • Ensures compliance with Officer Professional Military Education Program (OPMEP) and policy directives regarding academic programs and Outcomes Based Military Education (OBME).
  • Ensures academic programs are appropriately designed and delivered to protect and promote open intellectual discourse and academic freedom.
  • Provides consultation and leadership to colleges and components on faculty recruitment, retention, utilization, and development.
  • Chairs and/or serves as principal advisor or member on task forces related to academic matters internal and external to NDU.
  • Represents NDU Provost at Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Chief Academic Officer meetings.
  • Coordinates outreach and stakeholder engagement activities for the NDU Provost.
  • Promotes a climate that fosters respect among students, faculty, staff, and administration from a range of diverse backgrounds, ideas, and perspectives.
Management, Leadership, and Staff Coordination
  • Supervises the Dean of the Library and the Center of Excellence in Learning and Writing
  • Supervises the Office of the Registrar
  • Supervises the Health and Fitness Directorate
  • Oversight and the planning of NDU new faculty orientation, convocation, and student on-boarding.
  • Oversight of the planning and coordination for NDU Graduation.
  • Ensures that subordinate supervisors effectively carry out management's policies, provisions, and objectives in the areas of EEO, career development, merit promotion, and employee/management relations.
  • Management of OAA budget and hiring activities.
  • Oversight and consultation for budget issues for the academic enterprise.
  • Manages the day-to-day activities of the OAA to include drafting correspondence and compiling staff action packages, monitoring numerous staff actions for Provost's signature, making decisions on administrative issues, and directing the activities of the Provost's staff.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • At least five years of senior-level management experience in an institution of higher learning and demonstrated effectiveness as a leader in higher education.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty and senior leaders across an institution; evidence of the ability to lead teams and create a culture of collegiality.
  • Knowledge of Joint Professional Military Education.
  • A substantial record of excellence in teaching in a discipline related to national security studies at an accredited graduate level institution(s).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage employees as well as develop and interpret financial data/plans and manage resources.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education Requirement: A Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or, international equivalent.

Official transcripts will be required at time of selection to verify educational requirements are met.

Initial Probationary Period: You will be required to serve an initial probationary period of 18 months.

Supervisory Probationary Period: You will be required to serve an supervisory probationary period of one year if one has not already been completed.

Background or Security Investigation: This is a Special Sensitive position that requires a background investigation. The individual selected for this position is required to obtain and maintain a Secret security determination to occupy a Special Sensitive position within the agency as a condition of employment.
