This vacancy is a solicitation for a Hiring Fair Event, which will be on an invite only basis once the position qualifications have been met. If you receive an invitation, you will be required to attend in person on:

  • Date: 10/21/2023
  • Time: 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Location of Hiring Event: Prescott VA Hospital - (Address and map of hiring fair location will be provided to candidates who have met minimum qualifications for invitation)

You will be notified of your qualifications and if determined to be minimally qualified, you will receive an invitation for interview and MUST RSVP. Applicants should plan for a long day if selected, as there are several pre-employment stations to clear.

Requirements for Pre-Employment Screening:

Major duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs, in a hospital all ultrasound and radiology examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized. Performance of the examination requires proper alignment and position of the patient.
  • May also perform vascular imaging, both arterial and venous.
  • Knows and understand the principles of ultrasound and the highly specialized ultrasound and radiology equipment to approve the acceptability or reject ability of each scan.
  • Receives and identifies patients using two (2) patient identifiers, explains methods of procedures, assists movement of patients to and from wheelchair, table, positions the patient and performs examinations as requested.
  • The technologist interprets the requests or instructions from the radiologist or clinician. Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations and works independently.
  • Controls technical factors on ultrasound unit, which will affect time, gain, amplitude, velocity, frequency, attenuation, absorption, reflection, scattering, refraction and diffraction. Selects between non-focused, fixed-focus, linear phased array, an annular phased array.
  • Demonstrates skills in performing complex ultrasound procedures including color flow, Doppler carotid and arterial Doppler exams.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, cross sectional anatomy, and physiology such as the location, appearance and function of the various major and minor systems applicable to sonographic illustration in order to interpret the requested examination accurately.
  • Must be skilled in the technique of performing localization studies for invasive procedures such as biopsies and aspirations.
  • Advises radiologist of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing exam.
  • Properly selects patient's information from the HIS/RIS list on the workstation, verifies patient information prior to making an exposure. The technologist ensures all anatomy is visible, correct R & L markers are visible, annotations are made, correct orientation of the image, applies algorithm, configures the image and before transmitting them to PACS.
  • Assures completed examinations meet established standards, refers to supervisor or staff radiologists, questions or matters not covered by standards and problems in meeting performance standards.
  • Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations are not delayed due to the lack of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Independently makes routine radiographic examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injury.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m./8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. work schedule, but work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the service.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
  • Certification. Applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include Computed Tomography (CT),magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently. Advanced certification indicates that the applicant can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • Education. Applicant must have completed a full-time training course of at least 24 months in a duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Diagnostic Ultrasound) GS-9
  • Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
  • Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
    • Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
    • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
    • Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
    • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
    • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
    • Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
  • Diagnostic Ultrasound. Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical purposes. The practitioner must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. The sonographer is regarded as the expert source of all ultrasound imaging, and the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the sonographers in providing a final interpretation. Within this specialization, there is a diverse range of ultrasound imaging sub-specialties. These include: 1) diagnostic medical sonography - abdominal, neurologic, obstetrical/gynecologic, [musculoskeletal (MSK), a breast; and 2) vascular sonography-arterial and venous doppler, spectral analysis, and calculating ankle brachial index (ABI)].
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a health care setting. Work may involve exposure to infection and possible contagious diseases. Standard precautions and isolation techniques will be employed as indicated. There are occasions where response to physical and/or verbal abuse by patients requires knowledge gained from ongoing violence in the workplace training. Working conditions include: outside and inside work, exposure to radiation energy, constant noise (machinery/equipment), working around h azardous machinery with moving parts, working closely with others.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
