As an Intermediate Plate Printer, you will perform work utilizing a variety of complex and usually high-speed large format Intaglio Plate Printing presses and requiring a wide range of complex tasks associated with Intaglio printing, including printing U.S. government securities and currency from intaglio plates or cylinders.
Summary
This position is located at Bureau of Engraving and Printing within the PLATE PRINTING BRANCH WCF. As an Intermediate Plate Printer, you will perform work utilizing a variety of complex and usually high-speed large format Intaglio Plate Printing presses and requiring a wide range of complex tasks associated with Intaglio printing, including printing U.S. government securities and currency from intaglio plates or cylinders.
The following are the duties of Plate Printer. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As a Plate Printer you will:
Use extreme care and accuracy are needed when performing all set up and make ready functions.
Make press ready to print in accordance with established Bureau of the Engraving and Printing (BEP) procedures.
Install and position plates and/or chablons, secure and check materials needed such as paper, inks, rigging boards, wiper rollers, etc.
Lubricate press as necessary, load press, make all adjustments of peripheral devices and attachments.
Observe production of the press and make all single and multiple operating adjustments.

Physical Requirements: The work requires climbing and prolonged standing, stretching, bending and reaching during the operations and maintenance of the press. Exposure to potential skin irritations from the inks and solvents used and there is inherent risk of injury involved with operating large machinery with many moving parts. The incumbent lifts & carries supplies and materials weighing up to 50 lbs. Perform regular and recurring assignments requiring physical effort. Vision requirements are use of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Hearing required (aid permitted). Manual dexterity is required for the operation and adjustment of equipment and for the hand operations associated with binding and finishing activities. Must be extremely alert and attentive to work and equipment operations to ensure accuracy, detect equipment malfunctions and defective products, to avoid spoilage, and to ensure adherence to all safety requirements.

The facility typically shuts down annually between Christmas and New Year's Day. As such, all BEP employees must take leave for work days during the shutdown period.
