Duties

Help

While duties may vary for the Student Trainee (Energy Industry Analysis), some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • In the Office of Enforcement (OE): Assisting in the analysis of electric and gas markets, assessing market fundamentals/trends and complex issues of market structure, conduct and performance. Analyzing large volumes of data using R, Python or SAS and working independently to summarize anomalous market outcomes and visually present data. 
  • In the Office of Energy Market Regulation (OEMR): Assisting professional staff members in performing analyses of economic and regulatory issues associated with filings for the purpose of identifying trends, problems, or deviations from pertinent regulatory requirements or Commission policies and developing recommendations to resolve issues for use by the team leader or supervisor.
  • In the Office of Energy Policy and Innovation (OEPI): Assisting professional staff members, following detailed instructions, in the analysis and review of routine regulatory data and other documents associated with Commission filings that are routine or of limited complexity. Interpreting policy/regulations and applying them to analyses of specific issues arising in the regulation of the energy industry or on policies affecting the energy industry. Reviewing and analyzing data and documents on matters related to the energy industry. Managing large datasets and conducting analysis using statistical software.

You must meet all eligibility and qualification (experience and/or education) requirements by the end of the spring 2024 semester. 

Qualifications

Eligibility: In order to be eligible for our Pathways Internship Program, you must:

  • Be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on a half- to full-time basis (as determined by the educational institution); AND
  • Meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of your appointment; AND
  • Meet the qualification standards (e.g., series and grade).

For the GS-07: You can qualify based on your education, OR one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level, OR have a combination education and experience. Specialized experience is defined as: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word. 

For the GS-09: You can qualify based on your education, OR one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level, OR have a combination education and experience. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience or coursework in performing quantitative analysis on data using Excel, SAS, STATA, SQL, R or Python. 

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including any volunteer experience.
