Duties

Help

The Supervisory Museum Curator (Aeronautics) serves as the Chair of the Aeronautics Division (AERO), National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution. The primary functions of this position are to: lead and supervise the curatorial efforts of the division, which include collections, research, exhibits and public service. Other duties include:

  • Supervising the Aeronautics Department, responsible for research, collections, exhibits, and outreach efforts of the department.
  • Establishing general goals and directives for the staff, allocates resources and works with staff to develop budget requirements, and identifies external sources of funding and aids in development proposals.
  • Seeking out new visiting researchers or specialists to augment Aeronautics Department history expertise and coordinates interns, post-doctoral, and visiting distinguished researcher programs.
  • Maintaining active personal research program and authors research articles and books for publication in peer reviewed literature, etc.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.

or

  1. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

or

  1. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

GS 15 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as:

  • Conducting research in the history of aeronautics.
  • Leading and supervising curatorial efforts, which include collections, research exhibits and public service, and
  • Coordinating and supervising curatorial input to revisions, upgrades and new exhibit galleries.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of managerial systems and processes, such as program planning, budgeting, financial management and resource allocation.
  2. Knowledge of the federal budgetary process and federal regulations governing financial expenditures.
  3. Knowledge of a broad community of history of aeronautics scholars as judged by experience on review panels, invited talks, and other evidence of high professional standing.
  4. Knowledge of the history of aeronautics as exemplified by publications in peer-reviewed literature and other scholarly outlets.
