In this CBP Technician position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals performing technical duties requiring application of specialized knowledge of procedures, techniques, regulations and information. Typical work assignments include:

  • Assisting and providing support to CBP Officers and Agricultural Specialists on inspection, intelligence, analysis and examination of passengers, baggage conveyances and cargo
  • Operating scanning equipment to review contents of packages; screening incoming parcels for completeness of declarations, admissibility, entry status, and contraband
  • Examining cargo and merchandise; applying appropriate tariff number, value, and rate of duty and tax to merchandise; comparing passenger baggage to declarations
  • Preparing complex broker/importer cases for decision by specialists; and reviewing declarations and cargo manifests for completeness and compliance with applicable regulations
  • Coordinating and processing of data (permits, entries, declarations) into various automated systems
Duty Location: You will be asked to provide your preference for one of the following mission critical locations: Anchorage, AK; Douglas, Lukeville, Nogales, and San Luis, AZ; Calexico, Otay Mesa, San Francisco and San Ysidro, CA; Louisville, KY; Bangor, Calais, and Jackman, ME; Detroit, MI; Kansas City, MO; Saipan, MP; Vicksburg, MS; Sweetgrass, MT; Albuquerque and Columbus, NM; Columbus and Rosemont, OH; El Paso, TX; Salt Lake City, UT; Norfolk, VA; Norton, VT; and Blaine, WA.

NOTE: The above preference locations are expected to have vacancies available in the future, however, if the duty locations do not have vacancies at the time of your final offer, you may be offered a duty location in another geographic location within the United States.

Locations offered are based on operational and mission requirements, and critical agency hiring needs for entry level CBP Techs as determined by the CBP Office of Field Operations.

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise in office administration by performing work to support CBP Officers, Agricultural Specialists, and other CBP Specialists and Officers. This position starts at a salary of $42,022.00 (GS-06, Step 1) to $60,703.00 (GS-07, Step 10) with promotion potential to $60,703.00 (GS-7 Step 10).

Residency Requirement: U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a residency requirement that applies to all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three (3) of the last five (5) years, before completing an application for CBP employment. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two (2) of the last five (5) years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions:
  1. Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
  2. A dependent of a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. Government
  3. Working as a contractor employee, a volunteer, consultant or an intern for the U.S. Government
  4. Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-06 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Providing technical and clerical duties in support of inspection functions
  • Conducting searches of records and automated systems
  • Reviewing documents for accuracy and validity
  • Providing information to brokers, prospective importers and other inquiries
Experience: You qualify for the GS-07 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
  • Conducting inspections of baggage, packages, cargo, parcels, and/or persons
  • Reviews documents for completeness and ensure compliance with laws, policies, rules and regulations
  • Reconciling accounts and resolves and corrects errors
  • Responding to complaints and inquiries from internal and external customers
Note: There is no education substitution for the GS-6 or GS-7 grade level.

Work Environment: Work involves moderate risk depending on current assignment that may require special safety precautions. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear.
