Duties

Help

Decades in the making, the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum will recognize women’s accomplishments, the history they made, and the communities they represent. To create a more equitable America, the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum is researching, disseminating, and amplifying women’s stories to ensure the role of women in American history is well-known, accurate, acknowledged, and empowering. This position is located in the Communications Department and will work in a writer/editor capacity cross-departmentally for the benefit of Museum-wide projects.

In this position, you will:

  • Copy-edit, proofread, and write content for printed materials and digital channels, including the Museum's website, social media platforms, and e-newsletter
  • Conduct independent research of reference sources to verify data and factual materials
  • Edit, copy-edit, and review material in whole or in part, for overall structure and content as well as correctness of style, format, grammar and spelling
  • Work with internal staff and external vendors to coordinate, edit and produce printed and digital materials.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as editorial and production assistance for content available to internal and external stakeholders across various platforms and in digital and printed format; researching a broad range of sources of pertinent information; editing digital exhibitions, research reports, journal articles and other scientific, historical or artistic publications; utilizing editing technology tools to include word processing software, desktop publishing software, web-based collaboration systems and social media websites.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.
