This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. Individuals who are eligible for a special appointing authority may also apply such as Individuals with Disabilities (Schedule A), former Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and Vista volunteers; certain Military Spouses, or individuals eligible under various programs for Veterans (VRA, VEOA, 30% disabled).
As an Exhibits Specialist, you will design and produce museum quality mounts and frames for a wide array of artworks and objects.
In this position, you will:
Make and install inconspicuous specimen mounting devices of wood, metal, plastic, or fabric as determined by the nature of the object and final installed position and install specimens on walls, panels, or in cases, ensuring their security.
Serve as an advanced fabricator/exhibits specialist and work with technical independence to produce a wide variety of historic and contemporary frames and other elements designed to enhance the museum exhibition of valuable artifacts.
Order and track supply and inventories of materials required for construction and mount making projects.

Conditions of Employment: Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, loud noises, fumes, dust, falling objects, shop equipment, and other construction hazards. Incumbent may be required to wear protective gear. The position involves a combination of considerable walking, and physical work, as well as sedentary work, during all phases of exhibitions projects. Engages in lifting and carrying large art objects, pedestals, and vitrines. Additionally, may climb ladders, use electrical lifts and scaffolds for various reasons during installation or to determine the best construction methods to be used. The incumbent is required to be highly mobile to perform on-site inspections and overview of operations in the exhibit shops and in the exhibition galleries. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50lbs unassisted. Incumbent will operate a wide range of construction and exhibit design tools that require adequate precaution and safety measures.

Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as creating mounts for artifacts in a museum or similar setting; producing a variety of historic and contemporary frames and other elements; and ordering and tracking supplies and inventories related to exhibition projects.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position.
