Summary

Serves as the Deputy Director, Science and supports the Director in all aspects of leadership for the Science Directorate meeting the Agency goals and objectives. The Directorate is engaged in the Agency's astrobiology, astrophysics, planetary sciences, biological sciences, space biosciences, and Earth science programs. The Directorate conducts basic and applied research, technology development, and flight project development and operations for NASA programs.

Help

This position reports to the Director of Science. The Deputy Director of Science:

  • Collaborates with the Director to develop and implement long-term strategic plans, aligning scientific objectives with the Center's mission and broader agency goals.
  • Oversees the planning, execution, and evaluation of research projects and initiatives, ensuring the application of rigorous scientific methodologies and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manages the allocation of resources, including budget, staff, and facilities, to support ongoing research activities and facilitate the development of new scientific programs.
  • Fosters and maintains collaborative relationships with, and represent the Directorate to, internal and external stakeholders, including NASA HQ, other research centers, universities, industry partners, and government agencies, to enhance scientific collaboration and leverage shared expertise.
  • Supports the professional growth and development of the Science Directorate staff, cultivating a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and excellence.
  • Stays abreast of emerging scientific trends, technologies, and advancements in relevant fields, identifying opportunities to integrate novel methodologies and tools into ongoing research activities that includes a diverse portfolio of science, technology, and engineering research.
  • Effectively communicates the Directorate's scientific achievements, goals, and challenges to internal and external audiences, advocating for the importance and impact of the research conducted by Ames Research Center Science Directorate staff.
  • Fosters and continually promotes a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation both within and outside of the organization and NASA.   • The individual selected will be required to file an 'Executive Branch Personnel Financial Disclosure Report' (OGE-278) in accordance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
  • Initial Senior Executive Service (SES) Career appointee is subject to a one-year probationary period.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation commensurate with the risk and sensitivity level of the position.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug testing may be required.
  • Must meet qualifications requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

You must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/leadership experience, normally obtained over several years by serving in positions at the GS-15 level or equivalent.

To meet the minimum qualification requirements for this position, you MUST address each Executive Core Qualification (ECQ) and Mandatory Technical Qualification (MTQ) separately. If you fail to do so, your application will be rated ineligible. We recommend you provide two (2) examples of relevant experience for each ECQ. Responses to ALL ECQs must not exceed ten (10) pages; MTQ responses must not exceed one (1) page per MTQ. Please include your full name on all documents submitted.

If you are currently serving under a career SES appointment, are eligible for reinstatement into the SES, or have successfully completed a SES Candidate Development Program and been certified by Office of Personnel Management (OPM) you MUST submit a resume and in a separate document address the MTQs. Any ECQs submitted will not be considered. Your resume must clearly state that you are a current career SES, eligible for reinstatement, or SES CDP certified and year of certification.

EXECUTIVE CORE QUALIFICATIONS:

MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

MTQ 1- Demonstrated experience in science and/or engineering, with emphasis on one or more of the core mission areas: astrophysics, astrobiology, planetary sciences, Earth sciences, and/or space biological sciences. Recognition in the international science community for research and publications in one or more of astrophysics, space biosciences, planetary, or earth science, is desired.

MTQ 2- Demonstrated experience in managing a large and diverse portfolio of science, technology, and engineering research and projects to advance an organization's science objectives.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement. To be eligible, you must clearly state in your resume the following: degree, major and/or minor, and college/university.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.
