Duties

Help

The Director of Data Analytics & Insights will be responsible for delivering data-informed, actionable insights that support Smithsonian's digital transformation and the advancement of Smithsonian's business and organizational goals using data and analytics.  This position plays a key role in establishing and championing an organizational culture of data-informed decision making.

In this position, you will:

  • Create and execute a pan-SI strategy for how Smithsonian’s business and organizational goals can be advanced using data and analytics.
  • Consult SI leadership on the methods and techniques that make data meaningful and usable in measuring and achieving organizational goals
  • Direct and oversee the development and implementation of a wide range of data-gathering efforts and comprehensive data studies, including developing data analyses, that produce data-informed, actionable insights for leadership to enhance and provide options for strategic and tactical decisions that further organizational goals.
  • Plan, organize, direct, supervise, and manage the personnel and activities of the Analytics & Insights team.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.

or

  1. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

GS 15 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as:

  • Experience developing and/or implementing an enterprise-wide business intelligence and/or advanced analytics program within an organization serving public audiences within the non-profit, cultural, scientific, or academic sectors.
  • Advising senior leadership on data and evidence-based decision making to support organizational goals, the development of customer facing services, and application of advanced analytics and emerging technologies.
  • Developing and assigning data related roles and responsibilities and promoting employee development in data skills and analysis.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university

  4. Skill in managing, supervising, and motivating a diverse staff of professional, technical and support personnel, setting priorities, establishing schedules communicating effectively both orally and in writing and interfacing effectively will all levels of management.
