Summary
THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.
This National Guard position is for a POWERED SUPPORT SYSTEMS MECHANIC, Position Description Number PDD0818000 and is part of the MA ANG 102nd IW, National Guard. This is a Bargaining Unit position. Open to current members of the Massachusetts Air National Guard and those eligible to transfer to the Massachusetts Air National Guard. National Guard Membership Is required for this announcement.
1. Repairs, maintains and modifies electrical power production equipment and
aircraft arresting barriers. Performs repair of components such as fixed gasoline or diesel
engines, generators, centrifuges, starter motors, associated generating and distributing
equipment and aircraft arresting barriers. Conducts tests of equipment using voltmeters,
ammeters, ohmmeters, continuity tester, feeler gauge and other test equipment. Adjusts
and calibrates components to assure optimum operating efficiency within design
limitations. Modifies equipment in accordance with manufactures' specifications and
other technical publications. Accomplishes difficult operating and repair tasks.
2. Maintains and repairs electrical generating equipment. Performs inspection,
maintenance, and major modification; troubleshoots complex repair situations; and
performs other maintenance on electrical power generating equipment. Bench checks
repairable components and subassemblies of electrical power generating equipment by
using test equipment standards, load banks and other equipment standards as may be
required by technical data. Determines extent of repair/rebuild and accomplishes same.
Tests and calibrates repaired gauges, controls and meters to assure adequacy and
reliability. Interprets maintenance malfunction data related to the electrical power
generating systems.
3. Inspects electrical power production equipment. Analyzes malfunctions by
visual or auditory inspection, observation or operation and use of test equipment.
Interprets inspection findings and determines adequacy of cc 1ective action. Inspects
completed or in-progress work to assure compliance with standard operating procedures
and technical publications.
4. Advises on technical problems of installation and repair of electrical power
production equipment. Solves complex maintenance problems by studying layout
drawings, wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams, and analyzing construction and
operating characteristics of electrical generating plants and equipment. Devises and
establishes maintenance and operating procedures to ensure maximum efficiency of
operation and electrical power production plants. Diagnoses recurring malfunctions and
recommends repair procedures necessary to correct defective equipment Establishes
maintenance and operating procedures.
5. Installs, maintains, and repairs primary and secondary electrical distribution
systems, both overhead and underground. Performs "high pot" and "thumper" testing.
Determines generators load requirements and compatibilities, in terms of size, voltage,
phase, etc., in order to provide emergency power.
6. Operates standby units during commercial power failure and performs
operational checks, inspections, services and makes emergency repairs of standby units in
the field to ensure uninterrupted power services to facilities during power outages.
7. Assists electrical personnel in the various phases of installation,
troubleshooting and repair. Subject to emergency calls as required during non-duty hours.
8. During periods of military duty, supervises electrical power production and
interior and exterior electricians. Plans and schedules work assignments. Establishes
work methods, production controls, and performance standards. Assigns operating and
repair functions to subordinates and establishes priorities for work accomplished.
Assures compliance with published instructions, work standards and technical
publications. Formulates comprehensive training plans for drill status guard members.
Conducts on-the-job training as well as classroom instruction.
9. Trains traditional guardsmen and Air Force personnel on the installation,
operation and maintenance of expeditionary or semi-permanent aircraft arresting systems.
Develops and maintains lesson plans and training materials. When assigned
responsibility to install expeditionary aircraft arresting barriers, overseas and monitors the
work of members of the RED HORSE Special Capability Team.
10. Implements the Unit Environmental Program concerning hazardous material
within the electrical and power production sections involving spill containment and
hazardous waste disposal.
11. Prepares for and participates in RED HORSE operational readiness evaluations
(OREs), operational readiness inspections (ORIs), Quality Force Assessments (QAFAs),
and mobility and command support exercises.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have experience, or training which demonstrates the knowledge of mechanical maintenance work; ability to read and use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams and schematics, and skill in the use of equipment and hand tools used in troubleshooting, testing, and repairing equipment.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 18 months experience or training removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts, components, and accessories. Experience which provided working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to powered support equipment and systems; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments. Experience which provided working knowledge of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships. Experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of months/years.
