The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is seeking an exceptional candidate for the extramural Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) vacancy at the GS-12/13/14 level in the Division of Epidemiology and Prevention Research (https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/division-epidemiology-and-prevention-research-depr). The incumbent will be responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance in research on the epidemiology and prevention of hazardous alcohol consumption and related behaviors, alcohol use disorder, alcohol-related mortality and morbidity, and other alcohol-related problems and consequences. Program Officer positions offer opportunities to develop and lead targeted programs to address research gaps and foster innovative, high impact, and interdisciplinary research, advise the Institute on future scientific directions, interact with investigators in diverse scientific areas, assess the progress of awarded grants and contracts, and serve as an expert resource for the scientific community and the public. This position will oversee a grant portfolio of research areas including but not limited to alcohol prevention intervention, health disparities and health equity, psychiatric comorbidity, and gene-environment interaction. Additional duties may include work on NIAAA outreach efforts and representing NIAAA on trans-NIH/HHS committees.

The preferred candidate will have experience in alcohol or other substance use prevention intervention trials, preferably multi-component community-level or multi-level prevention intervention trials. Experience with intervention trial designs focused on individual-, family-, and school-based initiatives, women's and older adults' health, and/or alcohol policy impacts is also welcome. Individuals with strong scientific expertise in performing or leading research on social determinants of health, health disparities, and/or improving minority health are invited to apply. Experience with program evaluation, implementation research, bioinformatics/data science, genomics/epigenetics, or interactions between macro- and micro-levels of analysis would also be a plus.
