Summary

The Chief Architect within the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) serves as the senior official responsible for leading the formulation of STMD's $1.2 billion technology content investment plan to support NASA and U.S. space sector's future needs. The incumbent will ensure technical integration across STMD technology programs; serve as the primary interface with Agency-wide technology investment activities; and lead STMD's inter-government agency technology investment integration.

The Chief Architect:

  • Leads the STMD long-range technology capability investment planning and prioritization needed for the Agency from Low Earth Orbit and beyond, for both human and science exploration missions to further human presence and discoveries into the solar system.
  • Serves as a senior advisor to the STMD leadership team on strategic planning of technology investments.
  • Leads identification of promising technologies and architectures and integrates results from numerous activities across NASA and industry.
  • Analyzes the capabilities needed to advance technology development and identifies barriers that impact the infusion of advanced technologies into NASA missions.
  • Provides technical leadership to Principal Technologists (PTs) and Systems Capability Leadership Teams (SCLTs) for creation and maintenance of Strategic Technology Plans.
  • Examines current state of the art and recommends the future direction of technology development in coordination with the SCLTs/PTs.
  • Leads the development and coordination of a set of integrated strategic technology plans, prioritizations, and demonstrations that are unique to advancing the state of the art.
  • Represents STMD's technology development activities and coordination across multiple mission directorates, centers, Office of Chief Technologist, and external entities (e.g., other Government agencies, academia, and industry).
  • Serves as the Lead for STMD integration with International Partners.
  • Fosters and continually drives a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation within and outside of the organization and NASA. Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must possess broad engineering expertise, at least 1 year of which is in positions at or comparable to the GS-15 level, and must be a recognized subject matter expert. Must possess experience in mission architecture development and analysis for human exploration and robotic science mission sets and experience with technology development and applications for enhancing mission capabilities. Such experience also includes building and leading multi-disciplinary teams.

Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Additional information

NASA may discuss and consider candidate duty station location after selection, which means that the duties can be performed at any NASA location. The selected candidate will need to relocate and report to an on-site NASA location or duty station, which may be different from where he/she currently resides.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance.
