The COS is a member of the WTVAHCS Executive Leadership Team, along with the Medical Center Director, Associate Medical Center Director, Associate Director Patient Care Services, and the Assistant Director. The COS participates fully in upper-level management decisions to speak on behalf of all disciplines within the COS expertise and is a member of all health care system-level Councils and Committees that govern and influence the operations of the health care system, such as the Executive Leadership Council and Resource Management Committee, as well as other boards and committees.
The COS executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines, influences organizational mission and health care, and outcomes. Functions as an administrator, educator, resource, and consultant utilizing management theory in collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team.
Key relationships with staff are needed to:
(a) Consult with Supervisors/Managers/Leaders to carry out the functions and activities expected of them;
(b) Stand as a resource to contribute ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, objectives, and scope of practice for the enhancement of all assigned AOR;
(c) Assist in policy-making activities as related to assigned AOR and medical staff bylaws and the overall functioning of administrative and clinical programs; and
(d) Collaborate with other health care staff to establish and maintain programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Chief of Staff has 24/7 direct line authority, responsibility, and accountability for assigned areas and clinical practice. The COS is accountable for the management and supervision of patient care programs that promote quality care and effective utilization of personnel within assigned units/services/ programs. Other responsibilities for assigned AOR include leading, integrating, facilitating, and evaluating programs and outcomes; daily attention to complex personnel management problems; participation in executive level decision making deliberations; and performance in a full range of administrative duties. The COS works independently using sound judgment in making decisions and provides leadership to interdisciplinary groups at all levels to include the executive level.
Demonstrate exceptional relationships, communication, and leadership skills at all levels of organization and relates effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as other leaders at the local, network, and national levels.
The COS ensures high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner; promotes the development of health care professionals through mentoring, teaching, and encouraging self-assessment; monitors and promotes compliance with VA regulations, professional standards, and ethical conduct; works as a member of the Executive Leadership Team to ensure that our health care system programs reflect the mission and priorities of VHA and VA. Develops and maintains a good working relationship with schools for health care (e.g., medical, nursing, etc.) in an effort to recruit certified licensed professional staff with credentials from an approved accredited program. Ensures appropriate staff personnel are entitled and privileged in accordance with VA and the Joint Commission (JC) requirements and other appropriate regulatory agencies.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.)

Qualifications
Podiatrist Basic Requirements
Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
Board Certified in a Clinical Specialty (Internal/Family Medicine, etc.)
Experience ensuring adherence to performance measures and compliance with VA standards.
Able to serve in a leadership role and highly professional & collaborative manner.
Program/Supervisory experience as Section or Service Chief at a 1A Facility
Knowledge of VA Computer software/programs
Knowledge of Credentialing & Privileging, peer review and other quality assurance activities.
Knowledge of Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies.
