Duties

Help
  • You will perform duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program as specified by Department of Defense (DOD), Department of the Navy (DON) and Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) as well as the U.S. Code of Federal regulations.
  • You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team.
  • You will research the chemical and toxicological literature, develop and/or recommend individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation.
  • You will present oral briefs if requested, and provide detailed written reports of IH survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.
  • You will recommend medical surveillance for employees who are potentially over exposed to hazardous materials noise, and physical hazards.

Qualifications

GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Conducting industrial hygiene surveys, investigations, or inspections of hazardous materials;
  • Investigating health problems among workers to determine whether corrective measures or medical surveillance are required;
  • Preparing detailed written reports of IH survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended; and
  • Supplying technical assistance on industrial hygiene and occupational toxicology to staff (e.g., safety professionals, commanding officials, employee organizations, other agency personnel).
GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Recognizing and evaluating occupational health hazards;
  • Assisting other industrial hygienists in the conducting industrial hygiene surveys, investigations, or inspections of hazardous materials;
  • Assisting in preparing detailed written reports of IH survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive Basic Education Qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

FOR GS-07: SUCCESSFUL completion of one full year of graduate level education OR you have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement OR you have a combination of education and experience that equates to one year of experience.

FOR GS-05: SUCCESSFUL 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree OR you have a combination of education and experience that equates to one year of experience.

If you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you must submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.
