Summary

As a Molecular Biologist with Plant Protection and Quarantine, you'll be responsible for supporting pest identification activities with the use of molecular technology, assisting senior Molecular Biologists in finding cryptic pests, and performing other duties to assist with special projects related to molecular biology technology for entomology, botany, plant pathology, and malacology.

Duties

Help
  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Explaining and providing assistance for solving issues provided to Molecular Systematists
  • Collaborating with others to establish protocols used in molecular diagnostics
  • Assisting in the compilation of datasets of molecular sequences of intercepted plant pests
  • Planning, performing and recording diagnostic laboratory activities within the quarantine program
  • Performing classical, real-time polymerase chain reaction sequencing using the Sanger method and sequence analysis

Qualifications

To qualify, you MUST meet all program and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. To be eligible, applicants must meet one of the following requirements;

  • Completed all requirements for a bachelors or graduate degree from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two (2) years.
  • Individuals within two years of release or discharge from uniformed service who were unable to apply within two years of receiving your baccalaureate or graduate degree due to a uniformed service obligation of at least four years.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

FOR THE GS-9 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Applying knowledge of molecular biology and related disciplines such as entomology, botany, plant pathology and malacology to modify and adapt standard processes and procedures.
  • Conducting standard PCR, real-time PCR, sequence analysis or similar methods of detection for identifying plant pests in a laboratory setting.
  • Following guides and outlines for use of equipment such as PCR machines, gel apparatus, sequence analyzers, microscopes, and computers.
  • Training or providing guidance to colleagues or other stakeholders on new processes or procedures.
  • Modifying existing documentation with new or updated information to improve standard processes and procedures for scientific or regulatory work.
OR Successful completion of two (2) full years of progressively high graduate education or Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-09 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
