Duties

Help

As the Object Photographer, you will:

  • Make highly accurate digital captures of works of art using direct digital capture of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art objects from the extensive and diverse art collection using high-end digital equipment and lighting.
  • Document the collection including large scale sculpture and furniture, highly reflective silver objects, as well as traditional paintings, works on paper and general 3D art works.
  • Produces new and existing digital photography for use in publications, conservation and online. This process requires matching hues and tones of digital files to original objects and approval of images while following established standards and methods for optimizing and preserving digital images.
  • Follows color management standards and wokrflows to produce accurate digital prints in support of conservation documentation, exhibition development, corporate relations, press relations, and other programs.
  • Photographs and creates videos of National Gallery site specific art works, events, and personnel.
  • Follows detailed specifications for file naming, applying metadata, and cataloging the files in NetX.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1060-11. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, photographing two and three dimensional works of art.

  1. Photography – Knowledge of all aspects of professional digital photography including choosing appropriate technology for lighting, cameras, editing software, and file formatting.
  2. Color Management – Skill applying color management best practices for the capture and output of images of works of art.
  3. Image and Video file management – Ability to organize and maintain records of images in a database.

Experience

General Experience (for positions at GS-5 and below): Experience in operating camera and/or processing equipment. Such experience may have been gained in (1) operating still cameras, copy cameras, motion picture cameras, video camcorders, or other types of camera equipment that involved arranging lighting and composition, (2) developing and printing film or negatives, or (3) a combination of both.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-6 and above): Experience in operating standard and specialized camera and film processing equipment related to the position to be filled. Knowledge of the subject-matter being photographed may also be required for some positions. For positions that require a high degree of artistic or creative ability, samples of work or other suitable evidence of technical competence may be required. Unpaid experience that is pertinent should be credited based upon its relevance to the work of the particular position to be filled.

Education

Education (for positions at GS-5 and below): Major study -- photography, or other fields related to the position.

Training in photography at a vocational school or technical institute above the high school level is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.

Additional information

Applicant has expertise in digital photography workflows, ability to provide technical service related to image capture, image editing, and quality capture of cultural heritage objects using high-end digital cameras located in controlled studio environments and on location. Uses principles of photography combined with digital technology, sets up lighting, captures device targets in order to collect data on camera setup, calibrating for tonal and color accuracy, and determining resolution. Selects the proper equipment while taking into consideration user requirements and collection material characteristics for proper art material handling requirements provided by the Conservation Division.
