Duties

Help

  • Writes and edits a variety of material using plain language, including press releases, op-eds, talking points, speeches, blogs, and articles for media events, policy forums, conferences, and ceremonies.
  • Develops and synthesizes research findings on major criminal justice topics.
  • Writes and/or evaluates preliminary drafts and offers suggestions to project directors and NIJ staff, ensuring consistency with federal, DOJ, and NIJ guidelines.
  • Develops written technical materials designed to inform, educate, and enlighten affected audiences, as well as encourage them to adopt supportive positions on NIJ programs.
  • Represents NIJ in a variety of meetings, conferences, task forces, and working groups on best practices to design, develop, and disseminate research reports.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Writing and/or editing techniques, styles, and rules, in order to compose written content for various audiences across multiple platforms, including standards affecting government publications.
  • Writing and/or editing complex or controversial materials for a diverse audience.
  • Researching and/or developing processes, principles, methods, and practices employed in analyzing criminal justice research.
  • Identifying, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and/or presenting facts, highly complex information, and data to ensure accurate portrayal of agency research programs, policies, and objectives.
  • Publishing concepts, practices, standards, and technologies for the media used.

Technical Qualifications:
Applicants who meet the basic entry and minimum qualification requirements, as described above, will be further evaluated on the following technical qualifications:

  • Ability to translate complex content and technical material into written products easily accessible to a range of audiences.
  • Knowledge of production, communication, and dissemination of information and ideas to inform via written, oral, electronic, and visual media.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of editing.
  • Ability to perform editorial review of manuscripts and copy for cultural sensitivity, content, accuracy, and writing.
  • Ability to create products using writing and editing related technology tools, such as word processing software, desktop publishing software, web-based collaboration systems, and social media websites.

Additional information

  • This position has a duty station of Washington, D.C. The selectee will be required to physically report to the OJP office building at least two days per two-week pay period and may incorporate leave and official travel plans into this reporting requirement. The office director or supervisor may request the selectee's presence in the office more frequently, as determined by the needs of the office. The selectee will be responsible for covering all commuting-related travel expenses. OJP employees are eligible for one transportation benefit - parking or the Department of Justice (DOJ) transit subsidy.
  • This position may be eligible for telework per agency policy.
