Duties

Help
  • Receive and analyzes work order requests to determine type of survey required, priorities, deadlines, etc.
  • Serve as a public representative of the Corps of Engineers in the field with engineers, levee dam safety personnel; construction inspectors; and contractors and private land owners.
  • As assistant Party Chief and Senior Instrument Specialist, provides day-to-day direction to subordinate surveying technicians concerning operations of the work unit.
  • Makes decisions regarding whether to start, delay, or abort attempts to conduct surveys due to inclement weather or conditions of extreme heat, cold, humidity, severe storms, rough terrain, fatigue, or legal boundary disputes.
  • Correct hazardous working conditions, suggests improvements, and enforces safe work practices to ensure the crew's compliance with applicable safety policies, practices and regulations.
  • Research real estate and historical and legal documents, and federal, military, or county records to determine rights of entry and establish property ownership or boundaries.
  • Survey assignments most frequently include cadastral, topographic, and hydrographic from 3rd to 1st order accuracy.
  • Perform inspections and surveys of flood damaged levees along the river for repairs; maintains and supplements 3rd order triangulation system and uses sounders for changes in the river channel or lake bottom.
  • Surveys road relocations and reconstruction; performs surveys of sedimentation in lakes and rivers; profiles boat ramps, roads, etc.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Using survey equipment such as Global Positioning System (GPS) for determining latitude and longitude and/or mapping purposes; reading elevation/distance on a map; AND recording field data.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Analyzing and computing survey data gathered during field surveys with the use of several systems including a traverse adjustment system, level line adjustment system, 3D surfacing system, hydrographic data collection/processing system, and computer aided drafting system. AND 2) Making various computations using ties from coordinates; simple and transition curves; earthwork volumes and adjusting level loops. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Conducting hydrographic, topographic and boundary surveys to collect data to be used for planning, design and control of river improvement structures AND 2) Creating maps and computer aided design drafting (CADD) drawings using computerized/electronic survey equipment and field data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
