The position of Provost is located at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), a degree granting federal service academy that trains individuals to serve the national and economic security of U.S. licensed merchant mariners and commissioned officers of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Provost serves under the Deputy Superintendent assisting the Superintendent in leading the Academy and it's 1,200 midshipmen, faculty, and staff.
Summary

The Provost serves under the Deputy Superintendent assisting the Superintendent in leading the Academy and it's 1,200 midshipmen, faculty, and staff.
The Provost is responsible for carrying out the education mission of the Academy and directing the day-to-day operations for the academic program, to include supervising the academic department heads and office chiefs.
Provides oversight and direction to the following departments and offices: Department of Engineering; Department of Marine Transportation; Department of Mathematics and Science; Department of Humanities; Department of Naval Science; Department of Physical Education; Department of Shipboard Training; Library; Institutional Assessment, The Academic Center of Excellence and Registrar’s Office.
Leads the academic development and technical training of midshipmen, and for maintaining an educational program that motivates and prepares students to serve as exemplary leaders in the merchant marine and/or U.S. Armed Forces. To include the following:
Ensures USMMA maintains the highest level of academic quality and standards.
Sets the strategic direction for the Sea Year training program to ensure that sea time placements, required to qualify midshipmen to take the Coast Guard licensing exam, prioritize midshipman safety and well-being.
Ensures that all Academy programming fosters the development of leadership qualities among midshipmen, including strength of character, integrity, and the highest sense of honor.
Ensures adherence to standards, policies, and procedures on the campus and for the Sea Year training program that maintain the Academy’s standards and supports efforts to combat Sexual assault and Sexual harassment.
Supports a proactive program to ensure effective communications regarding the mission and operations of the Academy to Congress, the public, and other stakeholders, including managing effective coordination with DOT and MARAD regarding all such communications.
Works closely with the Deputy Superintendent, Superintendent, Maritime Administration, and Department of Transportation leadership to manage ongoing efforts to address operational and programmatic weaknesses at the Academy.

TQ 1: Demonstrated executive experience as a senior administrator at the college or university level directing educational programs with long-range implications, taking into consideration budget, staffing and other concerns.
TQ 2: Demonstrated executive experience planning, directing, and coordinating educational programs to meet the education needs of students, to include identifying key issues and developing goals and priorities to meet changing values and academic and technological advances.
TQ 3:Demonstrated executive experience in the development and implementation of educational technologies, to improve the education and training of students.

FUNDAMENTAL COMPETENCIES: The following competencies are the foundation for success in each of the Executive Core Qualifications: Interpersonal Skills, Oral Communication, Written Communication, Integrity/Honesty, Continual Learning, and Public Service Motivation.
Other Desired Qualifications: May have experience in a military sea service at any rank, have attained a Coast Guard merchant mariner license, and/or have led an educational organization or served as a senior leader in the Armed Forces or merchant marine. May hold a terminal degree in a field relevant to the Academy curriculum.

A Senior Executive Service (SES) reviewing panel will evaluate your application based on the quality and extent of your total accomplishments, experience, and education.
