Duties

Help
  • This position serves as a Park Ranger (Off-Highway-Vehicle) for the Canyon Country District.
  • Provides the public with off-highway vehicle information and conducts permit compliance.
  • Welcomes riders and educates visitors on responsible off-highway vehicle usage on public lands.
  • Performs maintenance and monitors off-highway vehicle use areas.
  • Ensures federal-owned off highway vehicles are in working condition and maintenance is completed according to rules and regulations.
  • Evaluates visitor use patterns, prepares, and maintains recreation sites, and monitors condition of sites.
  • Develops interpretive programs, conducting independent research of topics using sources such as records, books and files.
  • Interacts with a variety of age groups to provide recreation information.
  • Serves as collections officer and assist with campsite fee collection by counting fees following guidelines for handling cash, checks, and credit cards.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:

1) Applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a valid, state driver's license.

In addition to the selective placement factor, to qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include assisting in the enforcement of OHV policies and procedures; working as a park ranger to educate the public; working as a management, assistant, or program specialist involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; working with Park Ranger staff on travel management projects; and conducting OHV trail maintenance.

OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 120 semester hours of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work (Major Study - natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled).

OR Combination of education and experience: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.

In addition to the selective placement factor, to qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet one of the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include providing off-highway vehicle (OHV) information and education to the public concerning responsible OHV usage on public lands; planning day to day operations of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; reviewing and applying recreational policy, regulatory compliance and application related to inspection and processing of permits, compliance monitoring, and completing a variety of recreation related projects; and facilitating and organizing work project for employees and volunteers.

OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 18 semester hours of graduate education related to the occupation (Major Study - natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled).

OR Combination of education and experience: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching, and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.

Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrains, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
