Summary

This position is located in Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR).  The incumbent for this position serves under the USRO Shop Supervisor and performs a variety of duties in the zone.  The incumbent may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

Duties

In this position, you will:

WG-10:

  • Perform the full range of operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair; operates, performs predictive and preventive maintenance on, and repairs equipment and component parts of refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating, high pressure steam distribution, humidification systems, and boiler systems.
  • Install and recognize the cause of faulty equipment, and repairs, modify and relocate equipment that provides specific and critical conditions in laboratories and special purpose facilities.
  • Perform maintenance to equipment, make adjustments and repairs to equipment and control systems to ensure proper and efficient operation; test, detect and diagnose trouble in heating and air-conditioning systems and takes corrective action.
  • Clean and maintain interiors of all mechanical rooms, air intakes, and all other mechanical equipment and areas.
  • Assure the continuous operation and surveillance of the computers in the Central Control Room, analyze printout data and alarms and assure appropriate remedial actions are taken.

WG-11:

  • Perform the full range of operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair; operates, performs predictive and preventive maintenance on, and repairs equipment and component parts of refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating, high pressure steam distribution, humidification systems, and boiler systems.
  • Work with engineering and testing personnel while planning and modifying a system to meet specific conditions and accomplishes repairs and modifications to meet conditions required.
  • Assure the continuous operation and surveillance of the computers in the Central Control Room, analyze printout data and alarms and assure appropriate remedial actions are taken.
  • Operate and perform minor predictive and preventative maintenance of the building automation system for all Smithsonian buildings in the Washington D.C. area.
  • Troubleshoot both software and hardware related to systems, making repairs, program changes, and replacement of components as required.
  • Install new monitoring and control points for facilities and energy programs.

Conditions of Employment:

Must have a valid State or District of Columbia driver's license. (You must submit a copy with your application)

Must be available to work any one of the various shifts and/or assigned workdays that include holidays, weekends, and call back emergencies.

Must possess a current EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification. (You must submit a copy with your application)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

Ability to do the full range of a Utility System Repairer-Operator to include operations, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, without more than normal supervision.

If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:

  1. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operations, repair and maintenance (HVAC, electrical, steam).
  2. Knowledge of HVAC technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  3. Use of Measuring Instruments.
  4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  6. Knowledge of Utility System Materials.
