As a MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR (SMALL SHOP CHIEF) (TITLE 32), WG-5703-9, you will serve as a Small Shop Chief (SSC) with the responsibility for the overall operations of a small shop.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:

  • Possess the knowledge and skills found at the journeyman level as well as those required for planning, accomplishing and maintaining a functional shop maintenance program.
  • Independently determine appropriate maintenance procedures such as how and when the work should be accomplished.
  • Estimate manpower, equipment and material requirements.
  • Determine approaches, methods and courses of action required to accomplish the mission of the shop in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide recommendations and input to the supervisor concerning personnel actions such as performance appraisals, awards, position description changes, disciplinary actions, leave, etc.
  • Plan and lay out work to be accomplished in the shop which is then completed by the individual and lower graded worker(s).
  • Devise and maintain all program plans and records, is skilled in surveillance and troubleshooting techniques, and is able to determine maintenance/repair procedures needed without benefit of technical supervisory guidance.
  • Plan, organize and direct shop maintenance programs/procedures under general supervision.
  • Perform the same type and level of work as performed within the unit.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of considerations for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence,

  • The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.
  • The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees.
  • The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible.
  • The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership.
  • The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens.

Military Grades: Enlisted - Minimum Rank of SGT - Maximum Rank of MSG

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: MUST possess experience or training which demonstrates the ability to follow instructions and safely operate the type of equipment required to accomplish the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG 9 Level MUST possess at least 18 months experience or training which demonstrates the ability to operate and perform operator maintenance on straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds; experience demonstrating ability to operate truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers and motor coaches; experience operating vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow country roads, and on steep winding grades; experience driving vehicles without mishap in complicated traffic situations.

In order to be considered qualified, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal service.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
