Duties

Help

As a Registration Specialist, you will be responsible for the legal control and documentation of NMAfA objects; and the provision of support with all matters relating to the Department’s responsibilities.

In this position, you will:

  • Share responsibility for maintaining the safe storage of all objects, maintain primary responsibility for coordinating the safe movement and storage of works of art within the museum and to offsite storage, and maintain primary responsibility for coordinating the efficient function of storage spaces.
  • Provide support with Museum collection deposits and acquisitions and all documentation and tracking processes, complete incoming paperwork, maintains official records of legal transactions, and create paper and electronic files and supporting material which always record the object’s status and location.
  • Assist with domestic and international loans to and from the Museum and ensures the accountability of all NMAfA collection objects under loan contract.
  • Assist the Museum’s exhibition team with the installation and de-installation of temporary and permanent exhibitions, which are often large and multifaceted, demanding clear organization, preparation and teamwork.

Conditions of Employment: Incumbent must be able to participate in packing, unpacking, and other activities that may be performed standing, requiring considerable bending, lifting, stooping, and walking. Incumbent should be in excellent physical health, with no debilitating respiratory problems, allergies, or other physical impairments that may affect these tasks' performance. The incumbent of this position must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. The incumbent must possess the manual dexterity to handle fragile object.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as coordinating the safe movement and storage of 2D and 3D works of art; coordinating logistics for, reviewing, or documenting loans; receiving shipments for incoming loans and acquisitions deposits; and assisting with the installation and deinstallation of museum exhibitions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. 

Or Education: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below:

  • Ability to execute the principles of best practice surrounding the handling and storage of non-Western art, particularly 3D works of art, and museum registration procedures and policies.
  • Knowledge of ethics, policies, regulations, national and international laws governing the transport and acquisition of museum collections.

  • Ability to execute the processes and documentation associated with the incoming and outgoing loans from a museum collection.

  • Knowledge of the best practices and logistics involved with installing and deinstalling temporary and permanent collection exhibitions.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
