  • The scientist will be developing and testing behavioral chemicals or other biorational approaches for managing the beneficial and undesirable effects of insects on forest resources and ecosystem processes.
  • The scientist will be expected to conduct molecular studies for understanding the interspecific chemical interactions between insects and their hosts
  • Characterizing the interactions of insects with other disturbances in forest ecosystems at various scales.
  • The scientist will be responsible for executing the full research cycle, and he/she is expected to have the skills and abilities required to design and implement field or laboratory experiments.
  • The scientist is expected to develop an aggressive research program, including a combination of independent and cooperative studies with other scientists in the Team, Program, Station, other government agencies, or universities.
  • The scientist can participate in the development and administration of grants or agreements to facilitate cooperative studies with scientists in other agencies or universities.
  • The scientist selects and devises research approaches at the levels of complexity appropriate to his/her knowledge skills.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

Degree: entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology.

or

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS12: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Specialized experience at this level is defined as:
  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: 1) developing and testing behavioral chemicals or other biorational approaches for managing the beneficial and undesirable effects of insects on forest resources and ecosystem processes, 2) understanding the molecular basis of semiochemical communication between insects and their hosts to develop novel management tools, and 3) characterizing the interactions of insects with other disturbances in forest ecosystems at various scales.
  • Forming, leading, and participating in research teams of regional, and/or national importance.
  • Securing funding for scientific research through a variety of external funding sources
  • Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
For the GS13: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12). Specialized experience at this level is defined as:
  • Conducting a diversity or body of research in forest insects, biological threats to forests and rangelands from insects as a Principal Investigator or project member on multiple studies that include the full cycle of scientific research (i.e. identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities)as it pertains to: 1) developing and testing behavioral chemicals or other biorational approaches for managing the beneficial and undesirable effects of insects on forest resources and ecosystem processes, 2) understanding the molecular basis of semiochemical communication between insects and their hosts to develop novel management tools, and 3) characterizing the interactions of insects with other disturbances in forest ecosystems at various scales.
  • Conduct molecular studies for understanding the interspecific chemical interactions between insects and their hosts OR develop innovative approaches for determining how interactions with other disturbances such as fire, drought, disease, and silvicultural treatments cause insect populations to increase or decrease and subsequently affect the resiliency and sustainability of forest ecosystems
  • Developing and disseminating research findings in collaboration with resource managers and planners for presentation at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifying graduate education:

For the GS-12 grade level: Conferred Ph.D. degree that included scientific research in areas related to the work of the position which is forest insects, pathogens, and stressors; biological threats to forests and rangelands from insects, pathogens, and invasive plants and/or includes coursework in areas such as plant entomology, molecular biology, genetics, tree physiology, ecophysiology, and microbial ecology.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The duty stations for this position are located at the Forestry Sciences Laboratory, in Wenatchee, OR, Washington, OR, or La Grande, OR.
