Duties

Help

The Registrar (Collections Management) provides registrarial services for the permanent collections of the Freer and Sackler Galleries/National Museum of Asian Art, and as assigned acts as the project registrar for temporary exhibitions, providing project management and oversight of collections management issues, and is supervised by the Head, Collection Management. 

In this position, you will:

  • Ensures the timely and orderly processing and maintenance of exhibition object loan documents and ensures that all objects brought into the museum are formally registered, have properly signed loan agreements, and upon completion of the project are returned to their owners in accordance with
    established Collections Management policies
  • Be responsible for the registrarial/collection s management oversight of exhibitions (temporary and traveling).
  • Be responsible for assuring the prompt and accurate registration of all objects coming into and leaving the the National Museum of Asian Art, the maintenance of files and the preparation of documentation on the receipt, registration, condition evaluation, storage, and movement of objects in the collections.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position. For this position, specialized experience is defined as: experience applying collection administration policies and procedures to implement exhibition registration for international and domestic exhibitions in a museum setting or cultural organization.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.M., if related to position. Related courses: Museum Studies, Art History/Studies, US and World History, English, Communications, Business Management.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge working within the professional practices and ethical principles used in the registration, exhibition loans, and tracking of museum objects.
  2. Knowledge of methods and principles of exhibitions management.
  3. Knowledge of computerized collections management information systems.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
