The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) serves as a national catalyst for the organization and distribution of biological, hydrological, geological, and geographical information and addresses the specific needs of the Department of the Interior and its land and resource managers. The USGS is the Nation's largest water, earth, biological science and civilian mapping agency, working in cooperation with more than 2,000 organizations across the country with numerous international communities to provide reliable, impartial, scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers and partners.

The National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC) is an operational component within the USGS National Geospatial Directorate (NGD) which includes the NGTOC and the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. The NGTOC provides world-class geospatial technical expertise, research, and customer service for the USGS and the Nation and is responsible for the acquisition, assessment, integration and publication of geospatial data in support of The National Map. This includes oversight of Geospatial Data Products and Services Contracts, quality validation of products and data provided by external partners and contractors, development of national standards and data models, and providing technical assistance to federal, state, local and private sector partners.

The Pathways Recent Grad position is a non-supervisory position in the NGTOC Office of Operations. The Office of Operations is responsible for the creation, management, and delivery of data in support of The National Map (TNM), including the elevation data that comprise the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) and surface water mapping under the 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP). The NGTOC also produces derived products and services from TNM data, including US Topo map products and elevation derived hydrography.

The primary focus for the incumbents of these positions will be the production and quality assurance of geospatial data to improve The National Map and supporting source datasets. The incumbents will interact with higher-graded employees and the unit supervisor(s) to learn the processes involved. As the incumbent progresses in learning production tasks, the jobs assigned will be of increasing complexity.

The Pathways Recent Grad reports directly to the Unit Supervisor.

As a Cartographer within the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Use of GIS and associated software to perform a variety of review and editing tasks to vector and raster datasets.
  • Compile, review, and produce digital spatial databases, metadata and other digital cartographic products.
  • Work as a member of a team involved in an effort to obtain, analyze, apply and disseminate reliable technical and scientific information.
  • Solve problems associated with assembling, creating, evaluating, and integrating new or existing spatial data using GIS principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
  • Plan and coordinate with project team members working with schedules and deadlines.
Physical Demands: The work is usually sedentary.
Work Environment: The work is typically performed in an office environment.
