This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DOD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Serve as a Maintenance Worker for the park office to which assigned. The maintenance staff operates and maintains one or more flood control dams.

Duties

Help
  • Perform a variety of simple and routine maintenance, repair and operational duties for the park office to which assigned.
  • Perform routine tasks, such as, changing light switches, checking for blown fuses and checking for defective breakers.
  • Complete simple repairs to hydraulic gates, hoists and stand-by generators, such as, bolting down parts to machinery, checking fuel lines and lubricating systems and other power sources.
  • Perform minor repair of plumbing facilities, such as, replacing faucets, hose connections, lawn irrigation devices and miscellaneous fixtures.
  • Collect humidity, temperature and wind velocity readings from weather instruments, makes gage readings pertaining to water storage and performs related calculations.
  • Inspect dam and appurtenant structures and equipment using standard inspection checklists.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and vessels, such as, sedans, light duty pickup trucks, light tractors, fork lifts, motor boats, work barges, etc.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Possession of or the ability to acquire the following licenses: a state driver's license; a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license; and a fork lift operator's license.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • May be required to have a valid CPR certificate and first responder (or equivalent) certificate.
  • May be required to work in both non-permit and permit required confined space and implement proper rescue and entry techniques.
  • May be required to be properly trained and/or operate the following equipment: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA's), escape packs, atmospheric monitoring devices and fall protection equipment.
  • Required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation ER 1130-2-550, dated 15 November 1996.
  • Covered under the DA/USACE Random Drug Testing program based upon Dam/Flood Control Operations (USACE Specific Criterion) and Motor Vehicle passenger transportation operations (Govt. wide Criterion).
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Uses moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools, equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 lbs to 50 lbs unassisted. Occasionally lifts heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works in cramped quarters.
  • Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
