Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge (OCIJ), Executive Office for Immigration Review, U.S. Department of Justice. Incumbent serves as an interpreter, language advisor and expert for an Immigration Court, interpreting for and advising the Immigration Judges on language services in the Court.

Duties

Help

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs the full range of court interpretation duties consisting in large part of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions, from and into Spanish and English for the Immigration Judges, non-citizens, attorneys, and alien representatives during all types of immigration proceedings, including, but not limited to individual calendar hearings on the merits of each case, master calendar hearings (pleadings), and bond hearings.
  • Provides expertise in terminology, dialects, idioms, colloquialisms, and inflections.
  • Stays abreast of developments, conditions, situations, and sensitive information (e.g., intelligence reports, State Department alerts, etc.) in the various countries and areas of the world which impact on the non-citizens' cases to ensure and facilitate accuracy in interpreting difficult subject matter and sensitive information.
  • Translates the full range of legal, technical, and general material and information received or issued by the Immigration Court and any other EOIR component regardless of difficulty.
  • Performs intensive research to determine fine shades of meaning on highly specialized terminology in order to select and express the most appropriate specialized word or phrase to present and preserve the intent of the original source language.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for the Interpreter-Spanish (Language Specialist) position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, performing all of the following duties:

  • Interpreting both consecutively and simultaneously in Spanish and English on a variety of topics in a judicial setting;
  • Utilizing a broad range of vocabulary to include legal terminology and subject-specific terminology in both English and Spanish;
  • Translating legal, technical, and general material for legal proceedings; and
  • Researching new subjects, developments, and terminology to prepare for legal proceedings.

Proficiency/Interpreting Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be tested for language proficiency in English and Spanish, their ability to interpret in the consecutive and simultaneous modes, and in sight translation. Applicants must obtain a minimum passing score of 70 on the test. The proficiency/interpreting test will be administered virtually or in-person by ICA Language Services. ICA will contact the applicants and will provide written test instructions and computer hardware/software requirements at the time of test scheduling.

Conditions of Employment: Only U.S. Citizens or Nationals are eligible for employment with the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Dual citizens of the U.S. and another country will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All DOJ applicants, both U.S. citizens and non-citizens, whose job location is with the U.S., must meet the residency requirement. For a total of three (not necessarily consecutive years) of the five years immediately prior to applying for a position, the applicant must have: 1) resided in the U.S., 2) worked for the U.S. overseas in a Federal or military capacity; or 3) been a dependent of a Federal or military employee serving oversees.

Active Duty Service Members expected to be released or discharged from active duty service may submit a written document from the armed forces that certifies you are expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted. Those that pass the language proficiency exam will have their score combined with the assessment questionnaire for a combined final score.
