Duties

Help

The Supervisory Biologist is responsible for managing, supervising, leading and coordinating operations across the network in order to implement strategies that extend biological exploration, test scientific theories, and create new knowledge, primarily focused on marine biological science as it relates to invasive species.

In this position, you will:

  • Supervise staff in agency or organization’s marine biological invasions research program.
  • Strategically identify, develop, organize, and coordinate a complex research program in marine ecology of coastal ecosystems with focus on marine invasive species.
  • Originate and create innovative and competitive research proposals from external and internal sponsors for projects to support program goals and develops resources for research objectives.
  • Author and disseminates results in publications through peer-reviewed national and international journals and books, presentations of results and findings at international meetings and conferences, and synthetic summary reports for Smithsonian use and dissemination.
  • Serve and lead national and international advisory committees focused on environmental and biological research related to conservation and environmental stressors on coastal ecosystems.

Basic Qualification Requirements:

YOU MUST HAVE THE BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR THIS POSITION.

A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

or

B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

GS-15 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as research investigating marine biology and ecology such as environmental science, geography, biology, or other related subject; obtaining research funding from competitive internal and/or extramural funding sources; authoring data-rich papers with national and/or international application and significance in peer-reviewed journals; presenting research results to scientific and other audiences; and leading or managing coordination of complex research projects and teams.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

  2. Skill in managing a complex national/international research program on coastal ecosystems and biodiversity.
  3. Ability to receive funding from competitive internal and/or extramural sponsors to support large complex research projects in marine biology and ecology.
  4. Ability to author technical reports and research publications in international peer-reviewed journals and to present results and findings at professional meetings and conferences.
  5. Ability to provide innovative recommendations for advancing programs and/or methods of national and international significance that impact marine natural resources.
