Duties

Help
  • Physical Science Technician supporting Field Research Facility long-term continuous data collection program; specializing in reliably collecting high quality oceanographic data in the energetic surf zone.
  • Calibrate, program, service, and maintain oceanographic and meteorologic instrumentation used to measure hydrodynamic and meteorological conditions such as waves, currents, winds, and rain.
  • Monitor operational status of real-time instrumentation. Diagnose and repair failures in DC power systems, communication, and instrumentation that make up real time data collection system.
  • Deploy oceanographic instrumentation. This involves working on vessels, lifting, and bending.
  • Maintain detailed notes of instrument servicing, field deployment, and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and supplies required for instrument, communication, and power system installation, maintenance, and repairs.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project at the DE-03 (GS-08-10).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the DE-02 (GS-07 grade level) in the federal service which includes experience with oceanographic instrumentation such as acoustic Doppler sensors (ADCP / ADV) and pressure sensors, utilizing instrument principles of operation to mount, program, and clean oceanographic instrumentation; experience at sea deploying and recovering oceanographic instrumentation; experience with computer programs that communicate with gauges via serial, analog, and Ethernet interfaces; experience in diagnosing problems and determining needed repairs for malfunctions in electronic equipment or systems (power and interface issues).

OR

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Physical Sciences, or degree that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination physical science, engineering, and mathematics courses. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education (directly related to the occupation) and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
