Duties

Help

The Humanities Administrator position is responsible for administering grants related to the specific goals supported by the Office of Challenge Programs and throughout the NEH. The mission of the Office of Challenge Programs is to advance excellence in humanities research, education, preservation and access, and public programs by strengthening the institutional base of the humanities through matching grants that have a long-term impact. The incumbent is also responsible for the following:

  • Reviews grant proposals and assess eligibility and consistency with NEH goals.
  • Arranges for review and evaluation of grant proposals by peer review panelists.
  • Presents office policies, procedures, and funding recommendations orally and in writing to internal and external audiences.
  • Develops new grant programs within the NEH and with external partners.
  • Promotes the work of the Office and larger goals of the Endowment to outside constituents.
  • Works collaboratively with other Office staff members to advance the mission of the Office and the NEH.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

At the GS-12 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level or equivalent experience.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, for example: Specialized experience is defined as substantive experience as an upper-level administrator, development specialist, curator, faculty member, or other humanities professional at a nonprofit cultural organization or accredited institution of higher education. Specialized experience could include additional experience working in a grant-making office or institution or applying for and managing federal grants. Excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills are required for the position. In all cases, work in the humanities should have been performed with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, requiring somewhat extended professional training and experience.
At the GS-13 level Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level or equivalent experience.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, for example: Specialized experience is defined as advanced experience as an upper-level administrator, development specialist, curator, faculty member, or other humanities professional at a nonprofit cultural organization or accredited institution of higher education. Specialized experience could include coordinating and directing complex projects or fundraising campaigns to advance the humanities. Specialized experience also could include additional experience working in a grant-making office or organization or applying for and managing federal grants. All applicants should show evidence of knowledge of issues and trends in the humanities. All applicants should demonstrate important attainments and capacity for independent work.

Education

A Bachelor's degree in a discipline of the humanities is required for the GS-12.
A Master's degree in a discipline of the humanities is required for the GS-13.
