Help
  • Develop studies consistent with the mission of SRS-4157 (see Factor 1A) across the southern United States, with a particular emphasis on wildlife of the southern portion of the Central Hardwood Region
  • Develop a collaborative research program that addresses the needs of managers as well as address basic questions regarding wildlife demography, population ecology, and evolution
  • Use, modify, or develop complex population models that are appropriate for the system
  • Use state-of-the-art tools such as population and genetic models, GIS, remote sensing, analytical statistics, and spatial statistics
  • Collaborate with other federal researchers, university faculties/students, other federal/state agencies, tribal entities, NGO's, forest industry, and non-industrial private forest landowners involved managing and conserving wildlife
  • Supervise one or more positions as needed

Qualifications

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position. Basic Requirement for the 0486 Wildlife Biology Series:

Degree with major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included:

  • At least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; and
  • At least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; and
  • At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology.
Basic Requirement for the 0408 Ecology Series:

Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-12: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Specialized experience at this level is defined as:
  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: wildlife responses to silvicultural or natural disturbances affecting vegetation composition, habitat structure, and food resources, and improving techniques for wildlife inventory and monitoring; wildlife population and demographic responses to natural and anthropogenic processes, synthesizing research from multiple disciplines to model the effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbances including forest management activities, endemic and emerging diseases, non-native invasive species, climate change, and landscape configurations (e.g., connectivity) on animal populations of concern, and developing decision-support tools for managers and policy makers.
  • Designing field studies and using existing datasets to develop models that will enable land managers to advance conservation and management strategies and practices for wildlife communities including threatened and endangered species in upland hardwood-dominated forests and associated ecosystems
  • Forming, leading, and participating in research teams, regional, and/or national importance.
  • Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
OR

Conferred Ph.D. degree that included scientific research in areas related to the work of the position which is described above in specialized experience and/or includes coursework in areas such as animal population and genetic modeling, GIS, remote sensing, analytical statistics, spatial statistics, forest and/or wildlife ecology, landscape ecology, disturbance ecology, climate change, disease ecology.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
