This position is located at Department of Commerce OIG,Office of Counsel. As an Attorney-Adviser (General), you will be responsible for providing legal advice and services in support of the OIG's mission to promote economy and efficiency and to prevent fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement in Department of Commerce programs and operations. .

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-15. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an Attorney-Adviser (General), you will:

  • provide legal advice and review relating to audits, evaluations, investigations, and other products created by OIG components or in the furtherance of the OIG mission, and provide legal advice on a wide variety of Department of Commerce programs and bureau operations to OIG components within agreed upon deadlines.
  • provide legal advice and guidance on highly complex cases or legal issues in one or more fields, including civil, criminal, and administrative law and procedure; ethics law; fiscal law; procurement law; legislative affairs; information disclosure law(FOIA/Privacy Act); and employment and labor law.
  • provide legal advice on a full range of OIG issues, applications, and interpretations.
  • be responsible for the analysis of the legal issue in question, the development of the strategy to deal with the legal issue, and the content and means of delivery of the completed analysis of the legal issue.
  • provide authoritative legal advice to high-level agency officials and be responsible for effectively presenting the agency position before administrative or judicial bodies.

Applicants must: (1) be a graduate of an accredited law school with a LL.B., J.D. or equivalent; and (2) be an active member in good standing of the bar in a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.

Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions.

  • A one year Trial period may be required.
