Duties

Help

The Chief Toxicologist (Computational) serves as the Commission's recognized expert and consultant to plan, develop, and implement projects and activities for the CPSC Hazard Identification and Analysis and Hazard Assessment and Reduction Programs.

The incumbent will:

  • Lead efforts to quickly and accurately screen chemicals for hazard, exposure, or risk to human health when there is limited information about a chemical and use that information to formulate plans for filling data gaps and completing risk assessments.
  • Utilize computational toxicology/chemistry approaches to develop models to understand hazard, exposure, or risk of chemicals and use those approaches to build databases that support computational toxicology/chemistry approaches and tools.
  • Serve as a recognized scientific authority on chemical grouping approaches and assessment methods to determine similar or regular patterns and their application to a wide range of chemical hazards analysis.
  • Advise and make recommendations to the staff in EXHR, Office of the General Counsel, and Office of the Executive Director (OEX) for Commission procedures and programs for utilizing chemical grouping and read-across methods, including legal and policy dimensions.

Qualifications

In addition to the mandatory education requirement, all applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:  

Recognized expertise in computational toxicology/chemistry understanding the effects of environmental chemicals on human health through the combination of experimental data and mechanistic computational chemistry models, and chemical grouping approaches and assessment methods.

Evidence of the above specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held.  Your resume is the key means we have for evaluating your skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to this position. Education

Mandatory Education Requirement - All applicants must meet the following requirement to qualify:

Degree: toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

There is no substitution for specialized experience at this grade level.
