Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-05. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an Archives Technician, you will:

  • Provide reference services by searching for records in various filing systems that are either cross-indexed or readily identified.
  • Perform various duties related to the acceptance of incoming transfers of Federal records.
  • Use the Archives and Records Centers Information System (ARCIS) to assign newly received transfers to electronic staging areas or individual shelf locations.
  • Oversee lower-graded employees in the proper placement of new transfers and in the proper relocation of records in staging areas or on physical shelving, handle the disposition of records, and review records listed as eligible for disposal or accessioning in adherence with established guidelines, and ensures that proper witness disposal procedures are followed.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.

  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • This position requires candidates to pass a Physical Abilities Test. The work is performed on loading docks or in records storage areas where physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing 15' pulpit ladders, and lifting boxes of records weighing 30-50 lbs. is required. The work requires common physical abilities.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Operating office automation programs for maintaining database information; AND
  • Reviewing files or documents for completeness and compliance with established guidelines; AND
  • Responding to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing.
OR

You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.

OR

You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.


GENERAL EXPERIENCE: For the GS-04, you must have one year of general experience which includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
