Duties

Help
  • Develop innovative, environmentally safe, and ecologically based integrated weed management (IWM) strategies for invasive aquatic plants to protect water resources and aquatic and wetland ecosystem health in the western U.S.
  • Advance basic knowledge of aquatic weed biology, ecology and invasion pathways to develop and improve IWM strategies in aquatic and wetland ecosystems.
  • Evaluate new herbicides and improve herbicide application techniques to enhance IWM efficacy of established aquatic weeds and in rapid responses to new weed invasions.
  • Develop and evaluate new integrated management protocols and transfer these technologies for use by invasive aquatic weed and natural resource managers.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:
GS-0408 Ecologist (Plants) - Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

GS-0435 - Plant Physiologist - Degree: botany or plant physiology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 10 semester hours in plant physiology.

Evaluation of Education: The 10-semester-hour requirement in plant physiology is specific. Course work is qualifying if it dealt with plant physiology, some phase of plant physiology, or methods and techniques applied in plant physiology work. Other course work in borderline areas should be evaluated on the basis of content.

GS-0471 - Agronomist - Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.
or
Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must also possess the minimum qualification requirement(s) below:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and which has provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of the position.

Minimum Qualifications
GS-12: Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or its non-federal equivalent having obtained a demonstrated familiarity with aquatic plant biology and control measures and experience planning, conducting, and reporting research on plant biology.
OR
Education:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field of study. Examples of related fields include Biology, Environmental Sciences, Zoology, Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Soil Science.
OR
Education & Experience: E
quivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education and experience must be directly related to the work of the position and equipped the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position as described above.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service or its non-federal equivalent conducting research on aquatic plant biology and quantifying efficacy of control methods and demonstrated ability in planning, conducting, and reporting research on plant biology, ecology and control.

GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service or its non-federal equivalent, possessing demonstrated accomplishments in aquatic weed research and developing integrated weed management systems and experience leading a team in planning, conducting, and reporting research on aquatic plant biology, ecology and control.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To further support your qualifications, it is strongly recommended that you submit a one-page abstract of your MS thesis and/or Ph.D. dissertation. Failure to do so could result in loss of your consideration/referral.
