Summary
About the Position: This is a PERMANENT Safety and Occupational Health Specialist position with the U.S. Army Garrison Installation Safety Office located at Fort Jackson, SC.
ELIGIBLE FOR SITUATIONAL TELEWORK ONLY, INCLUDING EMERGENCY AND OPM PRESCRIBED "UNSCHEDULED TELEWORK".
Serves as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in the Garrison Division of the Fort Jackson Safety Office and reports directly to the Garrison Safety Manager.
Plans, organizes, carries out, and analyzes results of comprehensive surveys and job, hazard analysis of all areas and operations assigned on a frequency in accordance with designated degree of hazard.
Assists the Safety Manager with application preparation for the VPP and keeps him/her informed of major issues and obstacles in achieving VPP status.
Consults with subject matter specialists and managers about changes in work processes and proposed methods to eliminate unnecessary risks and
control hazardous conditions.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
Incumbent required to obtain and maintain Child Playground Safety Inspection Certification within 3 months of hire.
Incumbent required to obtain FC12 and EM Level One Certification within 12 months of hire.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes resolving technical matters regarding occupational safety and health requirements; inspecting workplaces, processes, products, and safety systems for compliance with safety and occupational health policies; and identify potential safety hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
