Help
  • Develop and formulate plans for conducting investigations and analyses of research projects requiring field sampling, mapping, and computerized data analysis.
  • Perform laboratory DNA analyses using techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing.
  • Install environmental sampling sensors and equipment such as soil moisture sensors, thermistors,
  • Troubleshoot and repair field environment analytical equipment such as custom gas flux chambers.
  • Predict effects of planned or natural changes in ecosystems using quantitative and systems analysis techniques to advise managers in predicting results of proposed management actions.
  • Plan projects or environmental activities coordinating with other scientists, resource managers, government entities, special interest groups, and the public.
  • Recommend priorities for ecological investigations considering land management needs, concern for resources, and special research problems.
  • Analyze study results and develop mitigation procedures to address negative impacts that proposed activities may have on the ecosystem.

Qualifications

Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience: month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed. Basic Education Requirement for Ecologist Series (0408): Degree: A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Minimum Qualifications Requirement for GS-9 Level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as:
--conducting field sampling and laboratory analyses to assess effects of environmental change on terrestrial biogeochemical/microbial processes with oversight from senior personnel;
--using a variety of statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, Sigmaplot, Qiime) to assist in analyzing these data (e.g., using regression, mixed models, bioinformatics, multivariate analyses) under the supervision of senior personnel;
--writing reports summarizing the outcomes of the study and statistical analysis (preferably a peer reviewed scientific paper) under supervision of senior personnel.
OR
Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree with (coursework directly related to the position being filled) in fields such as Advanced biostatistics (multiple regression, generalized linear models, mixed models, multivariate analysis; course in R or SAS); environmental microbiology; mycology; molecular methods for environmental science or ecology; biogeochemistry or soil chemistry; ecosystem science
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above. Only graduate education over 18 semester hours is creditable for this combination.

Minimum Qualifications Requirement for GS-11 Level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in federal service. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 9 level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as:
--designing studies, and conducting field sampling and laboratory analyses to assess effects of environmental change on terrestrial biogeochemical/microbial processes;
--independently using a variety of software (e.g., R, SAS, Sigmaplot, Qiime) for statistical analysis and visualization of these data (e.g., using regression, mixed models, bioinformatics, multivariate analyses);
--independently writing formal reports (preferably a peer reviewed scientific paper) summarizing the outcomes of the study and statistical analysis.
OR
3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with (coursework directly related to the position being filled) in fields such as Advanced biostatistics (multiple regression, generalized linear models, mixed models, multivariate analysis; course in R or SAS or python); environmental microbiology; Mycology; Molecular methods for environmental science or ecology; biogeochemistry or upper level soil chemistry; ecosystem science + field methods for ecosystem science; bioinformatics, metatranscriptomics, or metagenomics; data management or data science.
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above. Only graduate education beyond what is required for a master's degree (more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.) is creditable for this combination.
