Duties

Help

The Geographer serves as the subject matter expert and technical advisor for Geographic information system (GIS), Computer-aided design (CADD) and Relational database management system technologies to Smithsonian staff and contractors.

In this position, you will:

  • Identifies information requirements and recommends computing technologies and processes to support and enable the creation, management, and delivery of information appropriate to these
    information requirements using web tools.
  • Plans, and leads the collection, storage, and delivery of facilities data to support planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance of facilities, including developing data standards and
    processes for GIS, CADD, and Facilities Management (FM).
  • Develops and leads training courses on GIS and CADD technologies for SF staff.
  • Assists in the development of guidance for Architect-Engineer Professional Services contracts to ensure proper delivery of data content.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as utilizing Geospatial Information System (GIS), AutoCAD (CAD) software, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Facilities Management (FM) software and Relational Database Management Systems (RBDMS) to support and assist IT professionals, architects, engineers, or scientists

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Basic Requirements

  1. Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Skill in the use and application of GIS, CADD, RDBMS, FM and BIM technologies to support organizational missions(s).
  2. Ability to analyze information requirements and recommend solutions using RDBMS, FM, CADD, BIM, GIS, and web tools technologies.
  3. Ability to plan, manage, and lead the collection, storage, and delivery of facilities data.
  4. Ability to develop best practices standards and requirements for GIS, CADD, and other facilities data submissions and to review them for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standards.
