Duties

Help
  • Leads a large scientific team that is more than 25 staff members.
  • Manages annual budget of upwards to 9 million dollars.
  • Serves as the authoritative resources and expert advisor on research activities involving large-scale DNA sequencing and sets overall scientific and programmatic priorities for NIH Intramural Sequencing Center (NISC).
  • Stays current with the opportunities and the procurement of leading-edge DNA sequencing technologies, including expanding NISC's experimental repertoire when needed.
  • Collaborates with investigators across NIH to explore the use and implementation of leading-edge genomics technologies, molecular biology protocols, and analytical and computational procedures.
  • Collaborates on major research projects with international consortia and NIH intramural investigators. This may include developing, implementing, and assessing research projects.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts, technical reports and requests on scientific topics pertaining to DNA-sequencing technologies.
  • Gives advice, counsel, and instruction to employees on work and administrative matters.
  • Plans work for subordinates and adjusts short-term priorities and prepares schedules for completing work.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following education requirements:
A. have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university;
OR
B. have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

Additional Qualification: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: leading successful large scale DNA-sequencing research projects; planning and conducting large-scale, complex research projects involving the application of novel and modified technologies within a highly productive genomics center, managing annual budget for genome institute up to 9 million dollars; preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts and reports on behalf of genome programs; and providing technical and administrative supervision to employees, including assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, considering the difficulty and requirements of assignments and capabilities of employees.
