Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR).  The incumbent for this position serves under the Smithsonian Fleet Manager.  The employee is responsible for supervising the activities of Motor Vehicle Operators and Engineering Equipment Operators.

Duties

Help

  • Plans work schedules and sequence of operations for subordinates and establishes deadlines and priorities.
  • Performs all activities related to the supervision of staff including providing leadership and direction to staff. 
  • Determines manpower needs for the transportation operations function as well as equipment, parts, supplies and budgetary requirements. 
  • Manages and tracks an annual budget.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires standing, reaching, stooping, lifting and bending.  May require wearing ear and eye protection, gloves and safety shoes.

Qualifications

In order to be rated qualified, an applicant's overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Work periodically requires late shifts, weekends and holidays. 
  • Subject to being called in for emergencies. 
  • Candidate must pass a pre-screening Drug Testing.
  • Candidate must have a CDL License Class – B with P Endorsement.
  • Candidate must submit a photo copy of CDL License, front and rear.
  • Candidate must meet medical requirements.
  • Candidate must have and maintain a clean driving record, to include no major or serious violations as defined by the respective state.
  • Candidate must wear employer-issued clothing as designated.

  2. Knowledge of work practices (including keeping things neat, clean and in order).
  3. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation).
  4. Ability to safely drive motor vehicles.
  5. Ability to be reliable and dependable as a Motor Vehicle Operator.
