Summary

You will serve as an AUXILIARY MACHINERY ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN in the Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) Division, Engineering Department, of FORWARD DEPLOYED REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CENTER (FDRMC) DETACHMENT located in ROTA, SPAIN. This position assists Forward Deployed Naval Forces and deployed ships with Fleet Technical Assistance and Ship Maintenance Availability technical support.

Duties

Help
  • You will perform technical mechanical engineering services in support of ship repairs or overhauls.
  • You will advise management in the resolution of problems detected within life cycle shipboard maintenance or modernization analysis.
  • You will coordinate the design and development plans, specification and technical reports concerning all areas of design work for ships scheduled for repair, conversion and reactivation.
  • You will analyze ship design to recommend improvements to ship systems or equipment.
  • You will assess mechanical and material condition of auxiliary machinery and determine any necessary repairs.

  • This position requires that the incumbent hold a SECRET security clearance; eligibility for said clearance level is a basic job requirement.
  • Work will be required aboard naval vessels at berths, at naval facilities, and at shipyards in varying weather conditions. Shipboard investigations involve walking, climbing and crawling with marginal accessibility being a frequent problem.
  • You may be required to stand for several hours at a time on hard steel decks during ship visits.
  • You may be exposed to hazardous conditions such as: high voltages, large rotating machinery elements, electromagnetic radiation, explosive flammable orincendiary materials, turbines, condensers, and enclosed spaces below ship?s water line.
  • You may be required on short notice, to perform temporary additional duty at sea on naval ships and/or naval or private shipyards located throughout the world (including combat zones) utilizing government and commercial aircraft.
  • Helicopter and aircraft flights are utilized for transfer to/from ships at sea. High line transfer from ship to ship may be required.
  • Shift hours may be changed without 3 days advance notice and for periods of less than 3 week.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Using technical engineering theories, principles, or practices to resolve problems related to marine machinery, electrical and propulsion and power generation systems; 2) Developing solutions of design problems for shipboard equipment; 3) Repairing and maintaining elevators, conveyors, boat davits, sliding padeyes, hoists, Helo hanger doors, RAST (Recovery, Assist, Secure and Traverse system) and general deck machinery; and 4) Performing functional checkout, grooming, adjustment and tests of new or modernized shipboard systems. Priority consideration will be given to military spouse preference and family member preference eligible residing in the commute area of the duty location for this position. Commute area is defined as the geographic area surrounding the duty location in which people can reasonably be expected to travel back and forth daily.
