Duties

Help

The incumbent of this position serves as a conservator at MCI, with responsibility for performing a full range of activities associated with preventative conservation of museum collections and their environments.

In this position, you will:

  • Examine museum collections by whatever means necessary to characterize the nature of the objects and their artist’s materials for determination of the treatments required (e.g., investigating the nature of similar objects or coordinating and interpreting scientific analyses).
  • Conduct the appropriate procedures on the museum artifacts, documenting the processes in accordance with practices. and tenets of the profession.
  • Conduct research pertinent to the preventive conservation in the museum environment.
  • Serve as a mentor for MCI conservation training programs by participating in training design and development, student or intern selection and guidance, demonstrations, lectures (including-presenting general lectures on preventive conservation); or laboratory instruction.

Qualifications

At the GS-11 Level:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as conducting conservation treatments on museum collections; and practice in one area of preventive conservation (e.g. disaster management, environmental monitoring, surveys and assessments, shipping, exhibit and storage strategies, digital documentation).

OR

Education: Completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree if directly related.

OR

A combination of specialized experience and related Ph.D. level education as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

At All Grade Levels

  • Extensive knowledge of principles, concepts and methodologies requisite to conduct conservation treatments, e.g., chemistry, material technology and deterioration, and art historical and technological understanding; and of the practical or craft skills to fully comprehend practical considerations in the examination and conservation treatment of museum collections.
  • Skill in a broad range of preventive conservation technologies (e.g. disaster management, environmental monitoring, surveys and assessments, shipping, exhibit and storage strategies, digital documentation).
  • Ability in the procedures of conservation and technical research and publication, including (1) translate, synthesize, and apply previous experience in a new manner or develop new approaches to the problem at hand; (2) apply common research procedures to new research problems and/or conduct simple, basic research that requires no specialized interpretation of results.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
