GS-11 : $69,107 (Step 1) to $89,835 (Step 10);
GS-12 : $82,830 (Step 1) to $107,680 (Step 10);

Help

As a BIOLOGIST within the CARIBBEAN FLORIDA WATER SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Planning and conducting biologic investigations, including:
  • Analyze data regarding algal communities
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques regarding algae blooms
  • Leadership and teamwork for research projects regarding algae blooms
  • Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
  • Quantitative analysis of biologic information related to algae and Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs):
  • Collect and compute/analyze biologic data using statistical or numerical methods
  • Analysis of biological data using laboratory techniques
  • Knowledge of the environment, plant and animal living tissue, cells, organisms, and entities, including their functions, interdependencies and interactions with each other and the environment

Physical requirements: The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or
rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Laboratory work requires moderate physical ability and agility and dexterity to manipulate samples and operate equipment.

Work environment: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-11:
In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following:

Possess 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines.

**OR Possess one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-09 level work may include: 1) conduct identification and biomass sampling of higher plant and algae in wetland or aquatic environments; 2) compute, document, compile, and quality assure scientific data from field and laboratory measurements; 3) perform statistical analysis of algal community data, water quality, and physical habitat data collected as part of regional or national assessment programs; and 4) culture and run experiments with toxin producing algae using safe techniques.

**OR Possess a combination of graduate level education as described in above, beyond the first two years of progressive graduate study, and appropriate professional experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

For GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-11 level work may include: Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: 1) oversee up to four field and lab technicians in field-based ecological research; 2) participate in multidisciplinary scientific teams which include peers and senior colleagues, and which investigators were are dependent on other team members' data for their own products; 3) participate on workgroups regarding preparation of work plans and cooperative/contractual agreements, evaluation of field and laboratory protocols for algae, quality assurance of algal community data, and maintenance of the algal taxonomic information in computer databases. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.
