Summary
What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

As a Supervisory Geophysicist/Hydrologist/Geologist (Scientist in Charge) within the Alaska Volcano Observatory, Volcano Science Center, Office of the Regional Director, Alaska Region some of your specific duties will include:
Oversees and directs all volcano monitoring studies, hazard assessments, issuances of hazards warnings, emergency response planning and research on volcanic phenomena and associated hazardous processes for the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
Coordinates all volcano crisis response activities including establishing a 24/7 operation when needed, working with other public agencies to minimize social and economic disruptions resulting from volcanic activity, squelching false rumors of activity, ensuring that major events are properly monitored and documented, and that information regarding the hazard and what AVO is doing is communicated to the public.
Serves as the chief USGS spokesperson on eruption information and potential volcanic hazards posed by the onset of volcano-seismic swarms and eruptive activity at any volcano in the Alaska area. Incumbent authorizes regular reports on the status of volcanic activity in AVO's area of responsibility, and additional communications as needed, including substantial interaction with news media.
Serves as senior advisor regarding issues, opportunities, and planning of new research directions germane to the science of volcanology and the monitoring and mitigation of volcano hazards-to higher management in the USGS primarily the Volcano Science Center Director, Volcano Hazards Program (VHP) Coordinator, Regional Directors, and the Natural Hazards Mission Area.
Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license & safe driving record.
Selectee will be required to file the OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Statement, upon reporting and annually.
This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.

Qualifications

For Geophysicist, GS-1313: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR
B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For Hydrologist, GS-1315: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For Geologist, GS-1350: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-15 - In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-15:
Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Experience includes applying research to solve problems in volcanology or another natural hazards field. Examples of such experience could include investigations that involved highly unstructured problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues. The results of these investigations had significant effects over a wide region of the United States, or may have included responsibility for new technology especially critical to the organization's programs. This work involved other recognized senior technical experts asking the scientist for advice or counsel due to his/her personal reputation in the field.
