Help

  • Serves as the legal advisor to the Inspector General (IG) with respect to the formulation, coordination, revision, and execution of Office of Inspector General (OIG) policies and programs.
  • Provides legal advice and guidance on all audits, inspections, and other reviews of the U.S. Government Accountability Office's (GAO) programs and operations. Reviews all draft reports and documents for legal sufficiency prior to issuance.
  • Provides legal advice and guidance to the OIG investigators and coordinates with other investigative and law enforcement authorities, as needed. Prepares or reviews all subpoenas and other documents seeking information in the course of OIG investigations. Serves as the liaison during discovery and litigation with the Department of Justice or other prosecuting authorities in matters involving the OIG.
  • Provides legal review and substantive comments on all draft GAO orders, guidance and other documents either during preliminary review or during formal comment periods.
  • Reviews draft legislative and regulatory proposals and provide analysis and substantive comments to the Inspector General on the impact of such proposals on GAO or GAO/OIG operations or procedures. These reviews and analyses may involve coordination or discussions with key officials on Capitol Hill or in the executive branch.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with counsels in the Inspector General community through participation in Council of Inspectors General for Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) and Council of Counsels to Inspectors General (CCIG) activities.
  • Provides legal input and assistance in all personnel and ethics matters within the OIG; handles all but the most routine requests for public information (Freedom of lnformation Act requests); and responds to questions or concerns regarding whistleblower protection issues.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and other events that involve matters within the purview of federal Inspectors General, including programs sponsored by CIGIE, CCIG, other federal agencies, or professional organizations
  • Serves as the OIG's congressional liaison and maintains relationships with the authorizing and appropriations staffs while coordinating with GAO's Office of Congressional Relations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • You must remain an active member in good standing of a Bar of a state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico while in this position.
  • If selected, you will be required to provide an official transcript that supports your claim that you meet the education requirements for the position.
  • If selected, you must complete a background investigation.

Qualifications

You must meet the qualification requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement.

  1. You must be an active member in good standing of a Bar of a state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
  2. You must have at least four years of experience as a practicing attorney that shows you have:
    • Provided legal service, counsel, recommendations, reviews, or opinions regarding audits/engagements, investigations, inspections, or evaluations;
    • Addressed aspects of laws applicable to Offices of Inspector General such as Government Auditing Standards or Council of Inspectors General for Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) quality standards; or
    • Addressed contracting, employment, or criminal law issues.

Education

You must meet the education requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement.

You must have a J.D./LL.B. law Degree from an accredited college or university.
