Duties

Help
  • Plan and implement activities and proposals in accordance with applicable resource management plans, environmental assessments, cooperative agreements, and safety plans.
  • Work closely with landowners and cooperators within the geographic area to ensure weed management efforts are successful.
  • Informs users, the general public, and other bureau personnel of actions and proposals within the integrated weed management program.
  • Implements a variety of weed management activities, plans, and proposals for the organization.
  • Utilizes established methods and practices to treat, control, and prevent infestations.
  • Operates and maintains weed treatment equipment and supplies such as UTVs, herbicide sprayers, hand tools, chainsaws, and herbicides.

At the GS-04 Level:
General and Specialized Experience: I have 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-03) in the Federal service. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of specialized experience include participating in weed, vegetation, or forestry inventories; collecting and recording range data such as condition, distribution of plants, and volume of growth; conducting weed treatments under the direction of a higher-level pesticide applicator; assisting with inventory and monitoring of weed infestations; maintain spraying equipment and assisting with the proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides.

Education: I have completed two years of study above high school that included 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in math is creditable. I will provide a copy of my college transcripts.

: I possess an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above.

At the GS-05 Level:
Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include inventorying, identifying, recording, compiling, and reporting vegetation data; identifying the need for range improvement projects or inspecting condition or inventory of current projects; complete monitoring and inventory of weed treatment projects under the direction of higher level technicians including mixing, maintaining, and calibrating herbicides and pesticides; operating, maintaining, and completing inventory of weed management equipment such as tools, mapping equipment, or pesticide applicators.

Education: I have successfully completed a four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. I will provide a copy of my college transcripts.

Examples of specialized experience include complete monitoring and inventory of weed treatment projects under limited direction of higher level technicians including mixing, maintaining, and calibrating herbicides and pesticides; operating, maintaining, and completing inventory of weed management equipment such as tools, mapping equipment, or pesticide applicators; inventorying, identifying, recording, compiling, and reporting vegetation data such as the distribution, height, and survival, location of weeds, and unauthorized land use; maintain accurate records of pesticide or herbicide usage.

Education: I have completed one year of graduate level education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to this position. I will provide a copy of my college transcripts.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Work Environment:Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

This position falls under the Range Technician Series, 0455, Individual Occupation Requirements (IOR).
