Help
  • Emphasize the identification, evaluation, and treatment of historic buildings and structures.
  • Demonstrates and incorporates considerable knowledge and experience in the application of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
  • Participates in historic structures surveys as a team member to identify resources within project areas, coordinating with archaeologists as appropriate.
  • Performs review of permit applications to determine the presence of National Register eligible properties within an affected areas.
  • Assess permit effects to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Executive orders in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Contributes to environmental documents relating to historic structures and conducts library research for use in the assessment of probable impacts on historic structures by activities under consideration.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education AND experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Historian:

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you MUST also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing at least TWO of the following: a) preparing detailed studies of historic buildings and structures including the treatment of the physical history and furnishings; b) managing consultation and compliance issues focused on the built environment (including historic structures and buildings) and pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act; c) conducting built-environment/cultural resources investigations to assist in the preparation of review documents for compliance Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); d) identifying and evaluating the significance of built-environment/historic structures and buildings; e) participating in and communicating with multi-disciplinary teams and integrating built environment and cultural resources concerns and documents into project and planning review processes; f) managing projects or programs assuring financial management to plan and execute cultural resources programs, focused on the built environment (including historic structures and buildings) within scope, schedule and budget; g) developing and managing budgets and contracts for cultural resource studies or services to be conducted by contractors for the Government. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
