Help

Students placed in the SEC's Career Internship Program will work with SEC staff members on various projects and assignments that cover a broad range of the Commissions' work. The work assigned will depend upon a student's placement within a Division or Office. Internship assignments range from supporting securities regulations to assisting in professional administrative duties such as human resources, contracting, auditing, etc. Typical duties include the following:

  • Assist in conducting analysis and research in support of assigned program areas.
  • Respond to routine questions within the assigned program areas.
  • Assist in the maintenance of automated databases.

Location: This position is located within the SEC's Regional Offices. Interns will work in one of the following Divisions/ Offices:

Division of Enforcement (ENF) - The Division of Enforcement conducts investigations into possible violations of the federal securities laws, and prosecutes the Commission's civil suits in the federal courts as well as in its administrative proceedings.

Duty Locations:


Division of Examinations (EXAMS) - The Division of Examinations conducts the SEC's National Exam Program. The Division's mission is to protect investors, ensure market integrity and support responsible capital formation through risk-focused strategies that: (1) improve compliance; (2) prevent fraud; (3) monitor risk; and (4) inform policy. The results of the Division's examinations are used by the SEC to inform rule-making initiatives, identify and monitor risks, improve industry practices and pursue misconduct.

Duty Locations:

You will be asked to rank your Division/Office preference for internship placement.

Hourly Rates: Hourly rates are as follows:

  • SK-05: $16.98 to $25.97 ($35,430 to $54,201 Per Year)
  • SK-07: $21.03 to $32.64 ($43,888 to $68,123 Per Year)

  • INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: You must meet all eligibility requirements for the Pathways Internship Program at the time of application as well as the duration of the appointment . You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
  • GPA: You must have at the time of application and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent for the duration of the appointment.
  • ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENT: You must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. You must maintain status as a current student while on this appointment.
  • PROOF OF ENROLLMENT: You must furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each school term.
  • WORK SCHEDULES: Interns shall work full-time during the summer AND full-time or part-time (i.e., at least 20 hours per week) work schedules during the school year (based on agency needs) while continuing their education.
  • The anticipated start date of this position is in Fall 2023.
  • This position is eligible to request telework in accordance with the SEC's telework policy.
  • This announcement may be used to fill similar positions within the SEC.

Qualifications

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT

All eligibility requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

To be eligible for consideration for this internship under the Pathways Internship Program, you must meet the following:

  • You must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree or certificate at an accredited educational institution on at least a half-time basis (as determined by the educational institution) and
  • You must possess a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.
If selected, you must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of the appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

Note: Students must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in the upcoming Fall 2023 semester for consideration and placement in this internship.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT

The qualification requirements must be met within60 calendar days of the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In order to qualify for this position at the GS/SK-05 level, you must possess the following:
Four (4) academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. (Note: If you select this response, you must submit relevant transcripts.)

In order to qualify for this position at the GS/SK-07 level, you must possess at least one of the following:
(A.) One (1) full academic year of graduate level education. (Note: If you select this response, you must submit relevant transcripts.)
OR
(B.) Successfully completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree and claim Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:
(1) Class Standing - You must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; (Note: If you select this response, you must submit relevant transcripts.) or
(2) Grade Point Average (G.P.A.)
- You must have a grade point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; (Note: If you select this response, you must submit relevant transcripts.) or

Additional information

This announcement has been amended to extend the closing date from June 7, 2023 to June 12, 2023 to update the reporting requirements. Applicants who are selected may be permitted to work remotely at the discretion of the hiring official until completion of the Pathways program requirements. Upon completion of program requirements, and if converted to a permanent position, employees will be required to report in person to their assigned duty location of the position. Relocation expenses will not be covered.

SEC Compensation Program: The overall salary range listed above is provided for informational purposes as it represents the full range that is applicable to current employees in this occupation/grade; however, a selectee's initial pay is always set below the maximum rate of the range. This is a year-round internship, and the intent of the position is that the student is able to work at least 640 hours while still in school in order to be eligible for non-competitive conversion.

Conversion Eligibility: If selected, you may be non-competitively converted to a permanent or term appointment upon graduation as long as you meet the following criteria: (1) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the program; (2) obtain a degree or certificate; (3) meet the qualification standards for the position to which to be converted; (4) receive a recommendation for retention from a supervisor; and (5) meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant Agreement. All Pathways program requirements must be completed prior to the completion of the qualifying degree/certificate program. Conversion to the competitive service must take place within 120 days of successful degree completion. The 120-day period cannot be used for the Intern to finish any remaining program requirements, it is used solely for administrative purposes.

If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position's full performance level is SK-11; however, the full performance level may change based on the needs of the organization at the time of conversion.

Note: The SEC is NOT obligated to make an offer of permanent or term employment. Agencies may credit or waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work experience based on certain criterion, done on a case-by-case basis.
